New Delhi, June 17, 2026: In a significant move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has temporarily restricted access to the Telegram messaging platform across India. The decision follows recommendations from the

National Testing Agency (NTA) amid concerns over paper leaks, cheating rackets, and the spread of misinformation related to the country's largest medical entrance examination.

According to official statements, the restriction has been imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and will remain in effect until June 22, 2026. The measure is intended to cover the period surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21 and its immediate aftermath.

Why Was Telegram Restricted?

Authorities have alleged that organized cheating networks were using Telegram channels and groups to circulate leaked examination papers, fake question papers, and fraudulent claims regarding exam content. The NTA stated that the platform's features were being exploited by individuals attempting to mislead candidates and compromise the fairness of the examination process.

In addition to restricting access to the platform, MeitY has reportedly directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature in India until June 30, 2026. Officials believe that the feature had been misused to alter previously posted messages and create misleading evidence regarding alleged paper leaks.

NTA Welcomes Government Action

The National Testing Agency welcomed the government's decision, describing it as a necessary step to protect students from fraud and misinformation. The agency emphasized that maintaining transparency and fairness in national-level examinations remains a top priority.

Officials further stated that the temporary restriction is not intended as a permanent ban but rather as a targeted measure to curb malpractice during a critical examination period.

Telegram Founder Criticizes the Restriction

The decision has sparked debate among technology experts and digital rights advocates. Telegram founder Pavel Durov criticized the move, arguing that restricting the platform affects millions of legitimate users while failing to address the root cause of examination leaks. He stated that individuals involved in fraudulent activities could simply migrate to other communication platforms, making the restriction ineffective in the long term.

Durov also highlighted Telegram's efforts to remove channels involved in sharing leaked examination materials and scams, claiming that the company had already taken action against hundreds of offending channels.

Mixed Reactions from Users

Following the announcement, social media platforms witnessed mixed reactions from students, educators, and digital rights groups. While many supported the government's efforts to ensure a fair examination process, others questioned whether restricting an entire platform was the most effective solution to combat exam-related fraud. Some users also reported continued access to Telegram in certain regions, suggesting that implementation of the restriction may vary across internet service providers.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, the temporary restriction on Telegram highlights the growing challenges faced by authorities in maintaining examination security in the digital age. The outcome of this measure and its impact on preventing malpractice will likely influence future policies concerning online platforms and examination governance.

For now, the government maintains that the restriction is a limited and precautionary step aimed at protecting the interests of millions of honest students appearing for one of the country's most competitive

entrance examinations.
