NEET-UG to Become Fully Computer-Based from 2027: Government Announces Major Examination Reform

In a significant development for medical aspirants across the country, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) will be conducted entirely in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode starting from 2027. The decision comes after the nationwide controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak incident and is being viewed as a major step toward improving transparency and security in India’s largest medical entrance examination.

The Ministry of Education stated that shifting NEET to an online format is aimed at minimizing the chances of paper leaks, strengthening monitoring systems, and modernizing the overall examination process. With lakhs of students appearing for NEET every year, the reform is expected to bring better control, efficiency, and accountability to the examination system.

Why NEET is Moving to Online Mode

The announcement follows serious concerns raised after alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination process. Following public criticism and investigations into the paper leak issue, the government decided to introduce stronger security measures for future exams.

According to Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, computer-based examinations are considered more secure and technologically reliable compared to traditional offline OMR-based tests. The government is also expected to introduce advanced digital monitoring systems and stricter cybersecurity measures to ensure fair examinations in the future.

Expected Changes in NEET-UG 2027

Reports suggest that NEET-UG 2027 may follow a multi-session format similar to other national-level entrance exams conducted online. The examination could potentially be held across multiple days and sessions, with score normalization methods being used to maintain fairness among candidates.

Major Expected Features

Complete computer-based examination system

Multiple exam sessions and slots

AI-powered monitoring and security systems

Improved candidate verification process

Strong cybersecurity infrastructure

Reduced risk of paper leaks and malpractices

These changes are expected to make the examination process more efficient, transparent, and student-friendly.

Experts Support the Decision

Education experts and academic professionals have largely welcomed the government’s move, stating that online examinations can significantly improve exam security and reduce logistical challenges involved in conducting large-scale offline exams.

At the same time, concerns regarding internet accessibility, computer availability, and digital readiness in rural areas are also being discussed. The government is expected to work on infrastructure improvements before fully implementing the CBT system nationwide.

Re-NEET UG 2026 to be Conducted Again

Along with the announcement regarding NEET-UG 2027, the Education Ministry has also confirmed that the cancelled NEET-UG 2026 examination will be reconducted on June 21, 2026. Previously registered candidates will not be required to pay any additional fee for the re-examination.

Fresh admit cards and revised examination guidelines are expected to be released soon by the National

Testing Agency (NTA).

MBBS Abroad Emerging as a Strong Alternative for NEET Aspirants

Every year, lakhs of students appear for NEET with the dream of becoming doctors, but the number of government MBBS seats in India remains limited. As competition continues to increase, many deserving candidates are unable to secure admission in government medical colleges despite achieving qualifying scores.

However, students should understand that not getting a government MBBS seat is not the end of their medical career journey. In recent years, MBBS abroad has emerged as one of the most popular and affordable alternatives for Indian medical aspirants. Countries such as Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and several other destinations are offering globally recognized medical education at comparatively affordable costs.
